Cologne University Hospital Deploys Open-Xchange Server 6

Mon, 01/25/2010 - 08:56

COLOGNE, NUREMBERG, January 25, 2010 - It is now impossible to imagine the University Hospital of Cologne without e-mail. With the upgrade to Open-Xchange Server 6, the hospital staff can now use the latest groupware functions, as well as the AJAX-based web client.

The installation has been completed with a virtualized server in a highly-available ESX cluster. This makes it possible to transfer on the fly the server from one server room to another. All servers are redundant. If a server room fails, the other servers in another server room will start. The data for Open-Xchange Server is stored in a highly-available SAN and redundant copies are maintained. These measures increase the availability for hospital personnel and reduce potential downtime to a minimum. Indeed, it is important for the University Hospital that the system is available around the clock.

User data, in particular updating group membership, address data and name changes, are automatically transferred from SAP HR (the leading personnel data system) to Open-Xchange. And, the data from Open-Xchange is automatically transferred to the internal phone directory of the hospital.

The University Hospital of Cologne installation of Open-Xchange was supported by dass IT GmbH, a system integrator from Cologne. ”Overall, through their commitment, expertise and experience, the dass IT company has very well supported the University Hospital of Cologne," said Alexander Mössinger, IT operations deputy manager at the University Hospital of Cologne. "With internal IT personnel, it would not have been possible to extensively test, consolidate and carry out such a migration at the University Hospital in addition to carrying on our daily business."

All Open-Xchange groupware features are available automatically to all employees with a mail account with 83% of staff using Open-Xchange to manage their contacts. About 1,500 people organize their appointments with the calendar feature of Open-Xchange. About 500 people use the Open-Xchange Infostore feature to share common documents. The new Open-Xchange web front-end is very popular, preferred by 80% of users; only about 20% use local e-mail clients like Thunderbird, Outlook Express or Outlook. Another big advantage of Open-Xchange is the support of mobile devices through the ActiveSync interface.
